OTP Adventure Trip Activity Levels

Trip Activity Levels & Difficulty Ratings

Understanding trip difficulty is an important part of choosing the right Ocean To Peak Adventures experience. OTP Adventure Trip activity levels are designed to help participants clearly understand the physical demands, intensity, and commitment required for each trip, so they can confidently select an experience that aligns with their fitness, skills, and goals.

OTP trip difficulty ratings are based primarily on the core activity days of a trip — typically Days 2 and 3 — when full days of hiking, paddling, climbing, or other adventure activities take place.

Most OTP Adventure Trips follow a 4-day / 3-night basecamp format:

  • Day 1: Arrival, setup, short introductory activity

  • Days 2–3: Full activity days

  • Day 4: Pack-up, optional light activity, departure

Because of this structure, difficulty ratings reflect the most demanding parts of the trip, not the travel or arrival days.

How OTP Difficulty Ratings Are Determined

Trip ratings are based on:

  • Length and intensity of the main activity days

  • Terrain and elevation

  • Environmental conditions

  • Consecutive active days

  • Optional extensions that increase difficulty

Many OTP trips offer optional add-ons (longer hikes, deeper routes, technical objectives). These do not raise the overall trip rating, but they do require participants to self-assess readiness.

Level 1 — Easygoing

Relaxed • Accessible • Introductory

Level 1 trips are welcoming, relaxed, and designed to ease participants into adventure travel. Core activities are short and approachable, with ample rest time and flexibility built in.

Typical OTP Structure

  • Day 1: Arrival + short scenic walk

  • Days 2–3: Light hikes or activities with frequent breaks

  • Day 4: Optional easy movement, pack-up, departure

What to Expect

  • Core activity time: ~1–4 hours/day

  • Distance: Short hikes (generally under 4 miles)

  • Terrain: Flat or well-maintained trails

  • Elevation: Minimal

  • Optional activities: Easy, social, or scenic

Good Fit If You

  • Are new to multi-day outdoor trips

  • Prefer relaxed pacing and flexibility

  • Want a social, scenic adventure without physical pressure

Level 2 — Active

Moderate • Balanced • Well-paced

Level 2 trips represent the most common OTP Adventure Trip experience. Participants are active for much of the day, but the itinerary remains balanced and adaptable.

Typical OTP Structure

  • Day 1: Arrival + short hike or viewpoint

  • Days 2–3: Full days with hiking, paddling, or mixed activities

  • Day 4: Light activity or yoga + departure

What to Expect

  • Core activity time: ~3–6 hours/day

  • Distance: 4–8 miles/day (or equivalent effort)

  • Terrain: Natural trails, uneven surfaces, rolling elevation

  • Elevation: Moderate (up to ~2,000 ft/day)

  • Optional extensions: Longer hikes or added mileage

Good Fit If You

  • Are comfortable being active most of the day

  • Have basic hiking or outdoor experience

  • Enjoy full days with breaks, meals, and social time

  • Can carry a light daypack comfortably

Level 3 — Challenging

Demanding • Endurance-based • Rewarding

Level 3 trips are physically demanding on the main activity days and require preparation. These trips may include long mileage, elevation gain, or rugged terrain, with optional routes that increase difficulty further.

Typical OTP Structure

  • Day 1: Arrival + short acclimation hike

  • Days 2–3: Long, demanding activity days

  • Day 4: Optional light movement, pack-up, departure

What to Expect

  • Core activity time: ~5–8 hours/day

  • Distance: 6–12 miles/day (or equivalent effort)

  • Terrain: Steep, rocky, uneven, or sustained climbs

  • Elevation: Significant (up to ~3,500 ft/day)

  • Optional extensions: Longer routes, extra summits, technical sections

Good Fit If You

  • Have solid hiking or outdoor experience

  • Are comfortable with long days and back-to-back effort

  • Enjoy pushing yourself physically and mentally

  • Are prepared to train before the trip

Level 4 — Strenuous

Top-level • Pushing limits • High commitment

Level 4 trips are the most demanding OTP experiences. These trips require excellent conditioning, mental resilience, and confidence in rugged or high-consequence environments.

Typical OTP Structure

  • Day 1: Arrival + acclimation or technical prep

  • Days 2–3: Long, strenuous, or technical days

  • Day 4: Early pack-up + departure

What to Expect

  • Core activity time: 8+ hours/day

  • Distance: Often 10+ miles/day

  • Terrain: Steep, exposed, technical, or remote

  • Elevation: Very high or sustained

  • Conditions: Altitude, weather exposure, limited margins

Good Fit If You

  • Are an experienced hiker, climber, or mountaineer

  • Thrive on long, demanding days

  • Are comfortable with fatigue, exposure, and complexity

  • Are committed to training and preparation
